Armed robbery suspects arrested after car crash leads to police search

Halifax RCMP arrested two men Tuesday in connection with an armed robbery that happened Tuesday morning in Hammonds Plains, a suburb west of the city.

Police said that at 9:45 a.m., two masked men got out of a car in the parking lot of a business on Hammonds Plains Road. One of the men had a gun. Police said the pair threatened an employee of the business, who handed over some cash. The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police got a description of the vehicle, started searching and soon spotted it being driven recklessly. Shortly afterwards, the vehicle plunged deep into the brush when the driver tried to take Exit 3B on Highway 102, which leads to the Hammonds Plains Road.

RCMP said the driver was arrested at the scene of the crash, but the passenger fled. A police K-9 unit was called in and they tracked the second suspect to a backyard where he was arrested.

While the search for him was underway, police were asking residents in that area of Bedford Hills to remain in their homes because they feared the fugitive was armed. The second arrest happened around noon.

No charges have been laid yet.
