Halifax water main break that closed Dal campuses, caused dirty water, fixed

Halifax Water crews have repaired a water main break near Carlton and Summer Streets, close to the Public Gardens.

Some nearby customers saw dirty water and brown sediment as a result. Dirty water was reported downtown and in the city's north end.

Halifax Water said it is likely related to the repair and that the water is still safe to use and drink.

"It will be discoloured because of the lower pressure and the water main break," said James Campbell, spokesman for Halifax Water.

Campbell said it's not clear what caused the water main to break. The watermain was repaired and water service restored early Friday morning.

Dalhousie University closed both its Studley and Carleton campuses for the evening, Thursday. Residence buildings stayed open. Both the Studley and Carleton campuses are open Friday.

Campbell said the intersection near Carleton and Summer was closed as crews investigate the watermain break but it has since reopened.
