Former NHL goaltender Ray Emery dead in apparent drowning, Hamilton police say

Hamilton police have confirmed that a man who drowned in Lake Ontario was former NHL goaltender Ray Emery.

Police began searching for Emery, 35, after receiving a call Sunday morning at about 6:10 a.m. that he had gone swimming but did not resurface.

Police say Emery was with other people at the time and that they were taken into the police station to be interviewed.

Emery's death does not appear to be suspicious, police said, instead calling it a "case of misadventure."

Emery played for several teams throughout a career spanning more than a decade, including the Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers.

He won the William M. Jennings trophy — and the Stanley Cup — with the Blackhawks in 2013.

Former teammates, coaches and executives who played and worked with Emery have been expressing condolences online.
