What Will Happen to Mariah Carey’s Ring from James Packer?

If the news of Mariah Carey’s split from James Packer is permanent, there are some very important custody arrangements to work out. Who gets yachts for holidays and weekends? Who gets to take the jet to her children’s sports games and performances? And who retains custody of that 35-carat ring? While the billionaire and his (possibly former) butterfly work out the details, we’re revisiting the highlights and higher-lights of her ridiculously massive rock.

The Australian businessman and the soon-to-be-star of Mariah’s World had been fighting recently (“about some of Mariah’s eccentric ways, especially her spending habits,” says a source, which, rude) and are currently putting their jetsetting romance on hold while they work things out. And while this relationship may not be forever, that enormous ring will be here long after Bruce Willis crashes that spaceship into the asteroid (or whatever else the kids are using to signify Armageddon these days).

Because it’s always fun to talk about shiny things, let’s discuss the ring in question (and possibly in contention). Designed by Carey’s friend of more than 25 years, Wilfredo Rosado, it was created to the exacting standards of a diva about to pledge her life to one of the world’s wealthiest men. “I took the standards super high, and I wanted to create a ring that could not be measured up to,” Rosado said, adding that it took two weeks to create. “It was about mixing simplicity with volume, which is very difficult to do … It’s an epic ring for an epic time in her life.”

The emerald cut stone with two side baguettes, which is the size of Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian’s rings combined, is “so heavy I can’t lift my arm up,” Carey joked right after the proposal. And that, along with making her incredibly happy, was the idea, according to Rosado. “She obviously has a strong point of view about what she likes … I really wanted to create something for her that was about new beginnings,” he told Vogue at the time. “I wanted to create the most gorgeous ring for my dear friend, but I also wanted to create the most stunning ring for one of the most iconic divas of our generation. For me, it was super stressful. I didn’t want to fail her.”

We’d say the ring was a smashing success, and that Carey has a very tough decision to make. Until then, we imagine her staring wistfully at it, wearing a robe next to a crackling fire, set asea on her yacht, with a cabal of handsome, Champagne-carrying men on hand as her hits play in the background — as it should be.
