Happy Valley-Goose Bay reaches agreement with its workers
Unionized employees at the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will see a significant raise over the next three years, thanks to a new contract ratified by the town council on Monday.
The new collective agreement between the town and the Canadian Union of Public Employees will see a nine per cent wage increase for employees over three years. The agreement runs until Dec. 31, 2018.
In a statement, Mayor Jamie Snook said the agreement was fair to all sides.
"We would like to thank CUPE Local 2019 for negotiating to reach a balanced agreement that is fair to our employees and enables us to provide quality services to the community," he wrote.
"We were diligent in offering a wage increase to employees that would not force us to increase the mil rate for residents."
The CUPE local had been given a strike mandate, but there was no labour disruption during this round of bargaining, according to a spokesperson for Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
