An Australian man who nicknamed himself “Harry Potter” on social media has been accused by authorities of murdering a teenage boy who reportedly wanted a ride home, police say, according to multiple news outlets.

Jacob Greig, 32, was arrested and charged with murder after arriving at the Narellan Police Station on Saturday, Nov. 9, following a public plea for information put out by authorities, The New Zealand Herald, News.com.au and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) report, citing authorities.

Police said in a news release that officers were called to bushland off a road in Wilton, New South Wales, at about 7:25 a.m. on Nov. 9 after the body of a 15-year-old boy was found.

According to court documents obtained by The Herald, police allege Grieg fatally stabbed the boy during a confrontation they believe occurred sometime between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8.

Grieg appeared in court virtually on Sunday, Nov. 10. Prosecutors said the boy, whose name is being withheld by authorities, tried to rip the handle off Grieg’s car, saying in video and audio played in court that he was “trying to get home,” ABC reports.

Greig, who was in the area of Maldon Weir with a friend in the car, then got out of the vehicle and allegedly began chasing the teenager, according to News.com.au. Grieg can be heard in the footage allegedly telling the boy, ‘I’ll f------ get you good,” per the outlet.

The teen then allegedly knocked Grieg’s glasses off in a scuffle, during which Grieg allegedly said, “I’m going to chop your f------ hand off,” prosecutors said in court, per News.com.au.

Grieg claimed to police that he then slashed the boy with a knife before going back to the car, The Herald reports, citing authorities. The suspect further claimed to police that the teen was
“bleeding profusely,” per the outlet.

Subsequently, the victim got onto the roof of Grieg’s moving car as it was fleeing the scene and fell off, prosecutors said in court, per ABC. Prosecutors alleged, per the outlet, that the teen was left to die, citing a long trail of blood left at the crime scene.

Grieg’s attorney argued that it’s unclear whether the teen’s death was caused by the slash or injuries from the fall and said his client should be released to home detention. It’s unclear if Grieg has entered a plea.

Grieg’s Facebook profile states he works as a chef, has children, and goes by the nickname “Harry Potter,” a fictional character in the Harry Potter series of novels by J. K. Rowling.

Authorities said Grieg was denied bail and is expected back in court on Jan. 9, 2025, ABC reports.
