Harvey Weinstein has been stripped of his CBE following his convictions of rape.
The disgraced former film producer, 68, was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire back in 2004 for his contribution to British film, but in an official announcement in The Gazette, the UK’s official public record, it’s been confirmed that the Queen has revoked his appointment.
“The Queen has directed that the appointment of Harvey Weinstein to be an Honorary Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated January 19 2004, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”
The decision to annul the appointment came after a meeting at the Honours Forfeiture Committee, a body which is separate from government. They can advise the removal of any recipient’s honours if they are "deemed to bring the honours system into disrepute", however any annulments must be approved by the Queen.
Once arguably the most powerful figure in Hollywood, responsible for films that netted more than 300 Oscars, Weinstein announced his CBE in 2004, saying: “My life and my career have been greatly influenced and enriched by great British film-makers and authors and so I am especially honoured and humbled to be receiving the CBE.”
Today he is serving 23 years in prison after being found guilty of rape in 2018. He faces further criminal charges for rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles, however extradition proceedings have been delayed until December due to the ongoing pandemic.
