Hay River family warns of false fundraisers after fire

·1 min read

A resident of Hay River whose house burned down earlier this month is warning those trying to help her family that not all donations may be reaching them.

Kelly Lafferty says she lost her home in a fire on March 6. Now, she says there may be confusion about which local fundraisers are actually supporting her family.

Lafferty says the only fundraisers for her family have been created by Lafferty herself, her cousin Kandice Thomas, and Juliette Walsh through the group Kindness in Motion.

According to Lafferty, residents have reported being approached by other people attempting to raise money in her family's name. That money has not been passed to the family, Lafferty said.

A GoFundMe page started by Lafferty states the family is seeking help with the cost of rebuilding the home.

Lafferty told Cabin Radio she "just doesn't want anyone to be taken advantage of."

"It's heartbreaking," she said.

Lafferty said RCMP have been contacted. RCMP detachments in the N.W.T. are generally not available for comment outside weekday working hours.
