Head of N.L. Federation of School Councils resigns, cites 'fundamental impasse'

The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils has resigned his position, citing fundamental differences with the association.

In an email to Denise Pike, the group's executive director, Peter Whittle says the group had reached a "fundamental impasse," and his leadership had become "a distraction" from the issues.

"People come and go, the important role of the federation must continue," Whittle wrote Thursday.

"The important advocacy of the federation is too important to be bogged down by personal agendas and personality clashes."

According to Whittle, he had been a volunteer with the education group for five years.

The president has recently faced-off with Dale Kirby, the province's education minister, on a number of fronts. He claimed Kirby "scolded" him about public remarks made in June, and expressed concern the group's funding could be cut as a result.

In a recent interview with CBC Radio's On The Go, Whittle said he felt it might be time to "shuffle the chairs," which hinted at his own possible resignation and a desire to see Kirby step down.
