Heavy hail, flash flooding as Calgary hit by sudden storm

A flash storm, complete with thick hail and heavy rains, had people in Calgary running for cover late Saturday afternoon.

Environment Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of central Alberta, including Calgary and Red Deer. It warned of the potential of "dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain."

Streets and underpasses in southwest Calgary became flooded from the heavy rain, while an intense hailstorm rained down on parts of the city. The Calgary fire department responded to reports of flooded condo complexes in Sunalta.

Visitors enjoying the first weekend of the Stampede searched for cover as hail pelted the fairgrounds.

Flooding also caused delays on the C-Train system, according to Calgary Transit.
