Heavy rain, strong winds in forecast for western Sask.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms in forecast for northern Sask.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for a large swathe of western and central Saskatchewan.

The weather service is forecasting heavy rain and strong winds starting Wednesday and continuing until Friday.

It said a low-pressure system is expected to dump 30 to 50 millimetres of rain as it moves into western portions of Saskatchewan on Wednesday.

The heaviest rains are expected to be in the area of Meadow Lake and Île-à-la-Crosse, towards the southern portions of the Cree Lake region.

Thunderstorms in that area could result in more than 70 millimetres of rain over the two-day period.

Strong, southerly winds gusting from 80 to 90 kilometres per hour are also expected on Wednesday, shifting to northwesterly on Thursday.

A wind warning is also in place for Lloydminister, Sask., where an intense low-pressure system is expected to bring gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour starting early Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada said the winds could cause damage to buildings or cause loose objects to be tossed around.

The weather service urged residents of affected areas to monitor alerts and forecasts at its website.
