Henry Cavill is sharing his thoughts on sex scenes in film.
On Monday's episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast alongside his Argylle director Matthew Vaughn, the actor said of sex scenes, "I don’t understand them — I’m not a fan."
“There are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience ... [but] I think sometimes they’re overused these days," continued Cavill, 40. “It’s when you have a sense that you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary, or is it just people with less clothing on?’ ”.
He added, “That’s when you start to get more uncomfortable and you’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here. There’s not a piece which is going to carry through to the rest of the movie.' "

While he believes "sex scenes can be great in a movie" and "really help with the storytelling," the Justice League star added, "Most of the time, human imagination is gonna trump it."
"And so I think it can be a little bit of a cop-out if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies and you’re going, ‘Okay, but what is this doing for us apart from the idea of, 'Oh, naked person, great'?" Cavill said.
Back in 2015, Cavill admitted in an interview with Men’s Fitness that he once got aroused filming a racy scene, recalling of the "embarrassing" incident, "A girl had to be on top of me, she had spectacular breasts, and I hadn’t rearranged my … stuff into a harmless position. She’s basically rubbing herself all over me, um, it got a bit hard."
"I had to apologize profusely afterward," the Tudors star continued. "It’s not great when you’re in a professional acting environment and somebody gets a boner, is it? No, not acceptable.”
In real life, Cavill has been in a relationship with TV executive Natalie Viscuso for more than two years, with the two recently stepping out together for the London premiere of Argylle.
The couple went Instagram official in April 2021 when they each shared a photo of themselves playing chess together to their respective profiles.
Cavill and Viscuso made their red-carpet debut in New York City in October 2022 for the premiere of Cavill's Netflix movie Enola Holmes 2. They also recently appeared together at the Seoul premiere of Argylle in South Korea on Jan. 18.
Argylle is in theaters now, and will later stream globally on Apple TV+.
