Henry the rescue cat recovering after leg amputation

Henry, the little cat who could, has lost his leg but is recovering well, says a spokesperson for the Edmonton Humane Society.

Henry won the hearts of many Edmontonians last month when he was found on the side of a highway.

"Henry was very badly injured," society spokeswoman Kolbi Kukurba told CBC News on Tuesday morning.

His shoulder was dislocated and ligaments torn, while his front leg was broken and the tendons along one of his back legs exposed. He also had many scratches around his head, leaving society staff worried he had a head injury.

The tiny, 1 lb. cat pulled through and has been putting on weight for weeks, Kukurba said. His head and back injuries healed "really, really nicely," she said.

Staff weren't able to repair the damage Henry's front leg, however, so made the decision to amputate.

Asked whether it would be hard for Henry to adapt to three-legged life, Kukurba shared the story of another society animal who recently lost her leg, only to jump off the operating table and run to her kennel afterwards.

"There's a funny thing that we say at the Edmonton Humane Society — that we think a lot of animals were born with an extra leg," she said.

"He'll be up and at 'er in no time."

Meanwhile, money keeps coming in to a gofundme page set up in Henry's name. It's now amassed more than $8,600 — money Kukurba says will go into the society's sick and injured animal fund to help all creatures in need of extra care.

As for Henry, he is now recovering at his foster home. Kukurba said there are no immediate plans to put him up for adoption, but confirmed he will be up for grabs once he is healed.

She doesn't anticipate having any difficulty finding a forever home for the media darling kitten once he's ready for adoption.
