Heritage Day in Calgary: What to do in the city

Albertans have been celebrating Heritage Day on the first Monday in August since 1974.

​Although it is not a statutory holiday, many Albertans use this day as an optional holiday to celebrate the province's heritage.

Here are some family-fun ideas for those lucky enough to have it off.

1. Heritage Park

What better way to spend Heritage Day than at Heritage Park. There will be music, wagon rides and even a pancake breakfast for the first 500 guests through the gates before 10:30 a.m.

2. Fort Calgary

Learn about the city's history while enjoying family-friendly activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

3. Bowness Heritage Street Festival

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine and was organized to celebrate the community spirit in Bowness.

4. Olympic Plaza

There will be multicultural performances, ethnic foods and unique handicrafts for families to enjoy at Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary from noon to 6 p.m.

5. Symons Valley Ranch

Head down to Symons Valley Ranch at 9:30 p.m. for live music, food trucks and ice cream. Bring a blanket and watch the fireworks go off at 10:30 p.m.
