Update, Monday, 9:30 a.m.:

CHP said a male pedestrian was killed after being hit by multiple cars on Highway 101 on Sunday evening. The first car to hit him allegedly fled the area and was still outstanding as of Monday morning.

CHP was investigating the incident as a hit-and-run.

Highway 101 was closed through San Luis Obispo on Sunday night due to an incident involving “several vehicles and a pedestrian.”

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed at Madonna Road as of 9:10 p.m, according to a CHP post on X.

An expanded traffic collision was also reported nearby in the vicinity of the Marsh Street off-ramp just before 8:40 p.m., according to emergency response app, PulsePoint.

Numerous law enforcement agencies and emergency responders were at the scene as of Sunday evening, conducting an investigation on the stretch of highway between the Madonna Road and Marsh Street ramps. Those included the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, San Luis Obispo Police Department, San Luis Obispo City Fire and CHP.

CHP said the highway was expected to be closed for an “unknown amount of time.”

The incident was slowing traffic on the northbound lanes of the highway from the Madonna Road exit to just after the Los Osos Valley Road exit, according to Caltrans QuickMap.

Further details on the incident were not immediately available.
