Edmonton man hurt in crash north of Calgary

An Edmonton man is in hospital after he became trapped in a flipped car on Saturday — one of three serious crashes near Calgary this weekend.

Airdrie RCMP responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 566 near Symons Valley Road Saturday afternoon.

A 70-year-old man from Edmonton lost control of his vehicle and struck a guard rail, police said.

Emergency workers freed him from the vehicle and he was flown to hospital in an air ambulance with severe, non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers are investigating whether speed and alcohol played a role in the crash.

The highway was shut down for five hours and reopened Saturday night.

Cochrane crash injures 3

Two vehicles collided on Highway 1A, west of Cochrane between Horse Creek Road and Grand Valley Road, on Saturday night. Three people were hurt, two seriously.

The driver of one vehicle attempted to make a U-Turn and was hit by a second vehicle. The RCMP, who closed the highway for several hours, believe alcohol played a role and are reminding people not to drink and drive.

A single-vehicle rollover also temporarily closed northbound Highway 2 at the Bow River just south of Calgary on Sunday morning.

Two male youths escaped with minor injuries, say RCMP who are investigating.
