Travellers planning on taking Highway 401 this weekend will find themselves driving along detours as the roadway shuts down for a bridge demolition.
The province is breaking down the old Highway 40 overpass in Chatham-Kent — completely shutting down the 401 from 8 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.
Ministry of Transportation spokesperson Brian Kope, said contractors will lay a bed of sand on the pavement to protect the road before eight excavators dismantle the old, concrete crossing.
"They have hydraulic rams and basically cutting shears like big scissors that literally will break apart the concrete and reinforcing steel, and that will fall on to the sand pad below," he explained. "That concrete and reinforcing steel gets removed from the highway and gets piled up on the side of the 401, and then the highway is swept clean."
