Highway 404 northbound reopens in Markham after cement pieces fall off tractor trailer

Good Samaritan stops to help driver, gets his car stolen

Highway 404 northbound was closed in Markham between 16th Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive East for much of the morning after pieces of cement fell from a tractor trailer early Tuesday morning, damaging the roadway.

As of 8:30 a.m., the two left lanes of the highway were open again, though the right lane remains closed.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Lauren Ball told CBC Toronto that a tractor trailer's load of cement barriers fell onto the road before 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Another vehicle was involved in the incident, and the driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.

As a result of the falling cement, the roadway requires re-paving, said Ball.

"It could have been very serious," she said, noting that the cement pieces could have easily caused fatal injuries if they had fallen off the truck during a busier time on the highway.

She said that an investigation is underway into why the tractor trailer's load came loose, and that there is a possibility that charges will be laid.
