Alcohol a factor in Highway 59 crash near Birds Hill, RCMP say

RCMP say alcohol is a factor in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 59 near Birds Hill Provincial Park.

Several people were sent to hospital and the collision brought traffic to a standstill for hours Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews, including STARS air ambulance, were called to the scene between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

RCMP on the scene said they received a call minutes before the crash about a southbound vehicle driving erratically in the wrong direction on northbound Highway 59. The vehicle reportedly had a Saskatchewan licence plate.

Four vehicles were involved in the collision, RCMP said, adding everyone appeared to be wearing their seatbelts.

A group of people were seen gathered around vehicles after the crash.

There were no fatalities, but RCMP said several people were taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

RCMP continue to investigate.
