The Trans-Canada Highway near Birchy Narrows on Newfoundland's west coast has been closed since 8:30 Tuesday morning following a major accident.

Deer Lake RCMP said in a media release the road is closed because of a Tuesday morning crash involving three transport trucks, jackknifed across the road.

RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Jolene Garland said Tuesday there were no serious injuries.

Traffic has been backed up since the morning as cleanup continues.

As of 12:30 p.m., Garland said, the highway was still impassable. She said the RCMP will issue an update when the situation changes.

Roadways in the area, just west of Deer Lake, were reported to be slippery in the area Tuesday morning.

The RCMP issued an advisory about the road's condition and is asking travellers to avoid the area while the highway is impassable.
