Gatineau police seek clues in fatal hit and run

Gatineau man charged in connection with fatal hit and run

A 71-year-old woman has died in hospital after a hit and run on the edge of Gatineau Park on Thursday night.

It happened at about 8 p.m. near the intersection of promenade du Lac-des-Fées and rue Gamelin.

The woman was walking her adult tricycle northbound along promenade du Lac-des-Fées when she was struck and dragged several metres, Gatineau police said. It's not known whether she was walking along the side of the road or in the middle.

Police said the woman was found bleeding profusely and was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she later died. There's no evidence suggesting the vehicle stopped, police said.

Woman hit by truck with attached shovel

After witnesses came forward, Gatineau police said the woman was struck by a truck with a shovel attached to the front. Police were not able to identify the make or model of the vehicle.

"We are asking people if they have a neighbour, a colleague, a friend, someone in their family who has damage on their vehicle that was not there before to call us at our tip line," said Gatineau police spokesperson Const. Andrée East.

"Even very little information, even if they think it's not important could make all the difference for us."

People who live in the neighbourhood told CBC News they were familiar with the woman, who collected bottles with her adult tricycle. They also said they had been concerned for her safety.

Lac-des-Fées was closed between Gamelin and rue Brodeur as police investigated, but has since reopened.

The victim's family has been notified of her death.

Police are asking anyone with information to call (819) 243-INFO (4636).
