Hobbit Park stirs Dorval residents' imaginations
Smaug, the dragon from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, has found a new home in a Dorval park.
For the second summer in a row, municipal workers in Dorval have turned part of Windsor Park into a mythical scene.
This year's The Hobbit theme took two months to plan and build. Smaug, for his part, has been built out of recycled materials, as well as flowers and spoons.
A dozen municipal workers spent months conceiving and then building the dragon.
Sébastien Gauthier, a spokesman with the city of Dorval, said the project has one simple purpose: To put smiles on the faces of all those who encounter it.
"You look around, you see people taking pictures," Gauthier said. "So everything we can do to make people happy to live in Dorval, we try to do it."
And that's exactly what it's doing.
Don Houston and his grandson love to come and explore the site.
"This year it's a dragon, last year there were giants and we bring our grandson here [...] and, of course, for him it must be real and he's still trying to get inside to see the hobbit," Houston said.
He's not the only one.
"It's pretty cool. I wish we could go inside though — I really wanted to go inside," said Mark Barrel, who drove from Hudson just to see the park.
