Hoda Kotb is updating concerned fans on her younger daughter's medical status.

While chatting with PEOPLE for this week's cover story, the news anchor, 60, gave an update on her daughter Hope, 5, who experienced a sudden medical crisis in February 2023 that left the family searching for solutions and settling into a long-term medical journey. (Kotb declines to share the specific ailment out of privacy concerns.)

In the last six months, the mom of two says, “things have stabilized,” and moved Hope and big sister Haley, 7, out of New York City and into Westchester. Since the move, Kotb tells PEOPLE that Hope is "thriving" and "improving."

"We're in a place where Hope is thriving," Kotb tells PEOPLE. "She's improving, we're watching her, and I think as time goes on, we'll have a better handle on it, but we're already seeing great differences."

She continues, "We really have excellent care; I have people helping us out. I feel like she is finding steady footing."

When talking to PEOPLE again in August, Kotb shared her reasoning for the big move, saying, "I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, and play in the yard, and ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs."

"I just see that life for them in this perfect house in this beautiful little town where I know they'll be able to blossom into beautiful, independent, strong women."

Kotb also made another major change this year, announcing in September that she will be leaving the Today show after 17 years to focus on her kids.

"My broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie," she explained in a letter to staff of the NBC morning show, shared Thursday, Sept. 26. "I will miss you all desperately, but I’m ready and excited."

She'll stay in her current role until the beginning of 2025. But she won't be absent from the network entirely after the new year; Kotb will remain on in some capacity, writing, "Happily and gratefully, I plan to remain a part of the NBC family, the longest work relationship I’ve been lucky enough to hold close to my heart."
