Holland College promotes Earth Day principles all year long

People around the globe were celebrating Earth Day on Wednesday.

It's the largest environmental event in the world and Islanders were doing their part.

At Holland College, Cody Coffin was showing a recent class project — solar, air and hot water heaters — fabricated by students in the Energy Systems Engineer technology program.

It's part of the school's Earth Day event, which featured local farmers, environmental groups and provided a place for people to drop off their unwanted electronics for recycling.

"I care about it a lot. My father's a fisherman, [we have] lots of friends who are farmers and forestry workers," Coffin said.

"The environment's really important to me. I don't know how long we're going to be able to run off fossil fuels; it's something we need to look at now, especially our younger population as well."

The school had a sweater day, turning down the heat and encouraging all students to wear their sweaters.

For Earth Day, they also decided to switch off the lights. Holland College is also taking part in an initiative called "Lights Out Canada," turning lights out where they can to save on greenhouse emissions.

Earth Day festivities on the island don't end tonight.

There's an Earth Day Expo, offering environmental information, activities and workshops, that is taking place this Saturday at the Prince Edward Island Farm Centre.
