Hollyoaks will explore gender identity in a new storyline for Rose Lomax, it has been confirmed.

Rose's big new plot will begin next week, when their sister Dee Dee Hutchinson comes across an ID in newcomer Kitty Draper's bag which has an unfamiliar name on it.

When Dee Dee confronts Kitty about the ID, Rose tells her that it's normal for people who are transitioning to experiment with different names.

Rose later questions Kitty about her experience of transitioning, leading Kitty to explain that her father walked out on her when she was 14 due to her decision to transition. Sensing that Rose is holding back, Kitty tries to get them to open up, but the pair are interrupted by Rose's mum, Diane Hutchinson.

Kitty later laughs with Beau Ramsey about the love notes that they received, and they agree to have a drink together when they have time.

In heartfelt scenes that follow, Rose tells Kitty that they are questioning their own gender identity. Rose later tells Diane that they have something they need to tell her, but that they don't want anyone else to know just yet.

Dee Dee later agrees to cut Rose's hair, leaving the pair's parents shocked when they see Rose's new look.

Kitty later gives advice to Diane and Tony, who listen to what she has to say as they learn how to support their child.

Star Alex Fletcher, who plays Diane, exclusively told Digital Spy late last year that there was a "massive story" on the horizon for Rose, saying that the soap had "never done anything like this before".

"This story is gonna be a slow burn, and like I said, I think people are going to really invest in Rose's character," she said. "She's just gorgeous and I think when the audience see what she's going to go through, they're going to really feel it with her."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
