'Home': A Fujifilm and Magnum Photos collaborative project

In “Home,” a Fujifilm and Magnum Photos collaborative project, 16 Magnum photographers interpret this  theme — chosen for its global nature and human sentiment — in their own style and sensibility. Collectively, these sixteen visual short stories create a poetic and complex portrait of what home is and what it can be.

Exploring the notion of home was a formidable challenge for photographers who are comfortable and experienced documenting the lives of others but seldom examine their own. To some, home was the place they lived; to others, it was a welcome and peaceful return to their childhood memories. Some chose a distanced visual approach, photographing the geographical space of their home from above or from afar. Others chose to focus on generations of their families: babies being born, aging parents and teenage children leaving the nest.

This global project takes us to more than ten countries — through the suburbs of Minneapolis to student halls of London, and from a childhood home in Buenos Aires to the twilight hour in Adelaide Australia, the landscape of Cape Cod and the streets of New York City’s Chinatown.

Reminiscent of the legendary MoMA exhibition “The Family of Man”, the photographs highlight how dramatically the world has evolved since 1955, and with it the notions of family, home, motherhood and fatherhood.

The Fujifilm and Magnum Photos collaborative project “Home” begins in a ten-city exhibition tour at Milk Gallery in New York City on March 2 – 14, 2018, and continues to the Vinyl Factory, London, May 18 – 27;  Galerie Joseph, Paris, June 10 – 17; Daikanyama Hillside Forum, Tokyo, July 21 – 30, and Koeln Messe, Cologne, Sept. 26 – 29. Details about five additional international exhibitions will be announced, alongside a series of events and a commemorative photo book designed by Stuart Smith, to be published in March 2018. Each individual project is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes video, providing insight into the photographers’ motivation and ambitions for their work. (Fujifilm/Magnum Photos)
