Home renovation program approvals coming soon, says province

Islanders waiting to hear if they're getting a grant from P.E.I.'s home renovation program should have an answer in the next two weeks, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.

Of the 620 applications the province has received, 175 will be approved — 100 more than in previous years.

"This year, these programs will provide $1.1 million to Islanders who need support to make necessary renovations to their homes," said Currie in the P.E.I. Legislature Tuesday.

The funding is to help Islanders with heating, electrical, structural, plumbing or fire safety renovations.

Earlier this year, the province changed the program to give homeowners $6,000 grants, instead of $12,000 loans.

The program is also now based on income. A household's combined income must be $35,000 or less and the property value has to be $145,000 or less.

Another round of the program takes place in the spring. Anyone who's already applied won't have to reapply to be considered.
