Police remove suspicious device, Passmore Street residents return to homes

Residents have returned to their homes and Charlottetown police have cleared the area on Passmore Street, where a suspicious device resembling a pipe bomb was located in a shed.

Because the visual appearance of this device is consistent with how pipe bombs are constructed, Charlottetown police called the explosive disposal unit from Halifax for assistance, and it removed the object.

The pipe will be analyzed and police will investigate what it was doing on the property.

Bateson MacLeod, who has lived at the residence for about a year, said he was tearing down an old shed on the property when he located a metal pipe with end caps.

"At first we didn't really think it was much, we just thought it was, you know, an artifact or something else old that we pulled out of the rubble," he said.

I wasn't scared, but I definitely knew I didn't want to handle it anymore when I knew what it could be — Bateson MacLeod

"But then after we inspected it more and looked at it and realized what it looked like or what it could be, we said we better set it outside and call somebody that knows."

Charlottetown police blocked off the area and evacuated homes based on the potential blast zone relative to the type and size of the device, said Deputy Chief Brad MacConnell.

MacLeod said it's not something he expected to find in his barn.

"I wasn't scared, but I definitely knew I didn't want to handle it anymore when I knew what it could be."
