Woman slain in North End had filed for protection order against alleged killer

Cyclist rushed to hospital after being hit by vehicle in Winnipeg

The 20-year-old woman found bleeding to death outside a North End home Thursday morning was denied a protection order against the man now charged in her death.

Selena Rose Keeper was rushed to hospital just after 8 a.m. after she was found badly injured outside a home on Flora Avenue. Keeper died in hospital.

Police said Keeper was beaten inside the home and was eventually left outside. Witnesses were apparently unable to stop the beating.

Police have charged Ray William Everett, age 20, with second-degree murder in Keeper's death.

But in May, Keeper had applied for a protection order against Everett, writing she was afraid of the man and was worried about what he might do to her if they ran into each other.

Keeper had a baby with Everett in recent years.

In court documents, she recalled being slapped, punched, choked and kicked on multiple occasions over the previous two years, including during her pregnancy.

"I fear for my safety because I'm scared of what he will do if he ever seen me in public," Keeper wrote in the application for the protection order. She said Everett was part of a gang and allegedly had "access to weapons."

In one instance. Keeper wrote Everett allegedly attacked her at his mother's home.

"I woke up in the hospital with a fractured nose, four stitches … not knowing what had happened," she wrote. "[He] wouldn't let me leave him."

On the 13th question of the application form, Keeper was asked to fill in the blank, "I need protection on an urgent basis because:"

She wrote, "I want to keep Ray away from me."

The application was marked dismissed the day after it was filed. It is not clear why the application was dismissed.
