Homicide unit investigating 'suspicious death' in Richmond Hill

York homicide detectives are investigating a suspicious death in Richmond Hill.

Police were dispatched to an apartment at 45 Baif Boulevard after a 23-year-old man went to a local hospital with injuries early Saturday morning. Emergency room staff became suspicious after asking several questions and notified police.

An elderly woman was found dead inside the residence, police said. Forensic units are investigating the circumstances of her death. Her next of kin have not yet been notified and police declined to reveal her age. An autopsy is planned for Sunday.

There was no evidence of forced entry, according to police.

The man has been arrested in relation to the incident, but no charges have been laid.

Police said Saturday afternoon that the man in custody and the deceased woman were known to one another, but they did not elaborate on the nature of the relationship.

People living nearby were shocked to wake up to police cars and a forensic team in the building.

"It's unusual — it's a very quiet area and it's very surprising to be honest with you," neighbour Phil Strum told CBC News.

Other said there has been a recent surge in crime in the area, including a number of break-ins.

Anyone with potentially helpful information is asked to contact York Regional Police.
