Homicide team investigating after woman fatally shot while driving in Surrey
The RCMP's homicide team is investigating after a woman was shot and killed while driving in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey, B.C., early Thursday.
Surrey RCMP officers were called to an alleyway in the 13700-block of 75A Avenue just after 5:30 a.m. PT, after someone called about a vehicle that had crashed. An initial statement from the detachment said officers found a 30-year-old woman sitting in the driver's seat with apparent gunshot wounds.
She died at the scene. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit (IHIT) has taken over the case.
At a mid-morning news conference, IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang said investigators were still trying to identify the woman, as she did not own the vehicle she had been driving. Jang said the woman was in her 30s, but the vehicle is registered to a woman in her late 20s.
Jang said the killing is not believed to be random, based on what investigators saw "at the scene" and on "previous investigations that are similar in nature."
He said a possible motive could become clearer once the woman is identified.
Jang said officers spoke with people in the neighbourhood after the woman died and, based on that work, police now believe a second vehicle was involved in the shooting.
No one else was in the car with the woman when she was found.
Police are searching for security and dashcam footage as part of their investigation. Anybody living in the area with surveillance cameras is asked to check their recordings.
