On December 9, 2001, Michael Peterson called 911 in hysterics and reported that his wife Kathleen was lying at the bottom of their staircase, bleeding but still breathing. He said she had fallen down the stairs. What followed was a years-long saga for Peterson: a first-degree murder charge, a high-profile trial, bizarre theories about an owl, a blood spatter analyst’s discredited testimony, and his eventual release in 2017. Then came the dozens of true crime podcasts, a hugely popular documentary, and now, an HBO Max dramatization of the story starring Colin Firth and Toni Colette.

The newest show is an eight-episode long miniseries which follows Peterson (played by Firth) through his arrest, trial, and the making of the documentary about his story. The first three episodes premiered on HBO Max on Thursday May 5, and episode 4 on May 12. The remaining episodes will follow each consecutive Thursday at 3 a.m. ET.: episode 5 called “The Beating Heart” on May 19, episode 6 called “Red in Tooth and Claw” on May 26, episode 7 “Seek and Ye Shall” on June 2, and the finale, “America’s Sweetheart or: Time Over Time,” airs on June 9.

But there’s lots more Staircase content out there if you’re itching to learn more between episodes. Even Michael Peterson—who today is 78 years old and still lives in Durham, NC—has published two books on his case since his release: Behind the Staircase and Beyond the Staircase.
