A weekend celebration in Grand Bend, Ont. took a backseat to a rescue after it was discovered that someone had left their dog in a car on the sweltering summer day.

Will Costa of Kitchener was enjoying Grand Bend’s new bandshell Saturday when an announcer informed the crowd of the pooch’s plight.

“When I heard the announcer, I couldn’t believe it,” Costa told CTV News. “It was so hot.”

With temperatures reaching 30 degrees outside, the car must have felt much hotter, especially for a fur covered animal.

Costa headed over to the crowd of people watching a man try to break the BMW’s window, repeatedly throwing a large rock at the glass, and was able to record the moment the glass finally gave and the hot dog was saved.

He told reporters that it took about 20 minutes of pitching rocks at the window to finally get the dog out.

The man who took matters into his own hands has not been identified, but he can be overheard telling people that it must have been about 45 degrees in the car. People in the crowd all rushed to give the dog water and shade and help it cool off.

“The owners didn’t show up for another 50 minutes,“ Costa said. "I believe in another 50 minutes it could have been fatal.”

When the car, and presumably dog owners did return, they were surprised to see the damage to their car and their dog being cooed over by a group of strangers.

The pair were clearly embarrassed and were asked by police to go to the station, though Grand Bend OPP would not say if any charges had been laid against the young couple.

“In Canada, people who leave animals unattended in a car in a manner that risks their health and safety could be charged under a provincial SPCA act and under the Criminal Code of Canada,” reports The Weather Network. “Penalties include possible jail time, a lifetime ban against owning animals and up to $60,000 in fines.”
