House fire breaks out across street from St. John's fire station

Firefighters made quick work of a house fire in downtown St. John's last night.

Flames and smoke were seen coming from a house on Parade Street shortly before 11 p.m. — right across from the St. John's Central Fire Station.

The blaze was confined to the outside of the rear of the house, and crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.

The cause is still under investigation.

Despite the fact that the fire was so close to the fire station, the department's Zane Forbes said it still caused a lot of damage.

"[It] was ablaze, all up the side of the house, mostly on the exterior," he told CBC after crews had the fire under control.

"There's a bit of smoke and heat damage on the inside but most of the fire was on the exterior. The boys knocked it down pretty quick."
