‘House Party’ director on how he almost cast DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

“House Party,” written and directed by Reginald Hudlin, celebrates its 30th anniversary. The movie, released in 1990, starred Christopher "Kid" Reid and Christopher "Play" Martin, known as the hip-hop duo Kid 'n Play. Before the group joined the film, Hudlin tells Yahoo Entertainment another famous duo was being considered for the part — drums please! It was Jeff Townes and Will Smith, known as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. “I went to talk to their manager at the time, who was Russsell Simmons. He says no, we’re doing big things in Hollywood,” Hudlin recalls.

“House Party” was Hudlin’s first film. “It was a great movie with Kid 'n Play,” he says. “It would have been a great movie with Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff. It was meant to be the way we made it.”

Hudlin also explains the movie broke barriers for hip hop music. It even received an award for the movie’s safe sex message.
