Hugh Grant has spoken out in support of the Sussexes, following their announcement that they plan to step back as senior members of the royal family. The actor said during an interview on Sirius XM radio: "I’m rather on Harry’s side, I have to say," according to the Evening Standard.

"The tabloid press effectively murdered his mother [Princess Diana] – now they’re tearing his wife to pieces."

He added: "I think, as a man, it’s [Harry’s] job to protect his family so I’m with him."

The Queen released a statement following the meeting, confirming that she is "entirely supportive" of her grandson. "Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family," read the statement, which was shared via The Royal Family's social media channels.

"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family."

Grant's comments come as it's reported that Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, might be called to court to give evidence against his daughter, as part of her court battle with the Mail on Sunday.

The Duchess of Sussex is suing the UK newspaper for breach of copyright, invasion of privacy and misuse of personal data, after it published parts of a private letter she sent to her father, addressing how he was treating her.

The tabloid filed its defence arguing that the duchess and other royal family members “rely on publicity about themselves and their lives to maintain the privileged positions they hold”, and that Meghan couldn’t “have a reasonable expectation of privacy that the contents of the letter were private and would remain so,” reports the Guardian. And still they wonder why the couple wants out.
