Human remains found in rural Sask., belong to missing Saskatoon man

RCMP confirmed the human remains they found last Friday near the town or Arelee, Sask., belong to a missing person from Saskatoon.

Following an autopsy conducted on Tuesday, Mounties said the human remains discovered on May 20 in the Rural Municipality of Perdue are that of 37-year-old Shane Perret.

Perret was reported missing to city police and was reportedly last seen on Dec. 11, 2015.

RCMP said they are not releasing the cause of death but the incident is being treated as a homicide.

In a news release, police said it was not uncommon for Perret to hitchhike or rely on others as a means of transportation. He is not known to have any immediate ties to the rural location where he was found and police describe the whereabouts of his remains as isolated.

Residents of the town of Arelee, Sask., about 72 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon, and surrounding area are encouraged to report any suspicious activity they may have seen in the area since December 2015.

Police said they received reports of Perret being spotted in Nanaimo, B.C., on Jan. 27 or 28. These were unconfirmed sightings that police followed up on with negative results.

Perret's family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
