Hundreds of apartments planned for fast-growing downtown Sacramento district
Downtown Sacramento’s housing market continues to show remarkable resiliency.
Another big bet is being placed on the area in the form of a 300-unit apartment building planned for a mostly empty lot on the edge of the Railyards district. The new building would be built on the block bordered by G and F streets, and Sixth and Seventh streets.
Plans for the project submitted to the city of Sacramento show a five-story building with balconies, courtyards, a roof deck and a pool. The units would range in size from 508-square-foot studios to two-bedroom apartments of around 1,200 square feet.
The 240-acre Railyards district stood for decades as an empty landscape north of downtown. Visible from Interstate 5, it was a stark reminder that Sacramento’s urban core still has untapped potential.
City planners and business leaders have long banked on a new Major League Soccer stadium, offices and a hospital complex to serve as the catalysts for the Railyards. Those amenities have not taken off yet, but a handful of significant housing projects have injected life into the area.
Three major apartment buildings have either been built or are under construction in the southeastern part of the Railyards. They include the 345-unit AJ apartments that were completed last year and the 150-unit Wong Center Senior Apartments, available to low-income seniors, that is under construction.
A timeline for the new apartment complex was not available. Representatives with Fairfield, the development company, could not be reached for comment.
