Hundreds fill Winnipeg streets for Way of the Cross march

At least 1,500 people marched down Winnipeg streets on Good Friday for the Way of the Cross.

The annual Catholic event commemorates Jesus's carrying of the cross before he was crucified.

Christian Martinez said the walk provides a rare opportunity for Catholics.

"For me it means a lot because it isn't often we get to celebrate our faith in such a public way," he said. "It's just beautiful to see so many people, so many people celebrate their faith."

Prayers were read at several stops along the walk, which went from St. Mary's Academy on Wellington Crescent through the Crescentwood neighbourhood.

Alyssa Licsi joined the crowd and said it was great to see so many in the local Catholic community all in one place.

"It's crazy because this is probably like one of the times that you can see the whole archdiocese of Winnipeg as a Catholic church come together," Licsi said.

Organizers say they handed out 1,500 brochures describing the event.
