Hungry like the wolf: Banff warns of bold wolf in search of human goodies

Parks Canada is warning visitors to steer clear of a wolf that is bold and lacking fear of humans in its search to fill its tummy.

It has approached backcountry campsites and sought human food rewards, the agency said.

The animal has been observed in an area that includes Twin Lakes to the northwest over to the Red Earth Creek Trailhead, the Borgeau Trailhead, Healy Meadows, Sunshine Village and more.

"Special caution is recommended when travelling in this area due to a bold wolf in the area," Parks Canada said in a bulletin.

The agency is urging visitors to safely store food and garbage, keep children and pets supervised and avoid feeding or approaching wildlife.

Act aggressively if a wolf confronts you, carry and be able to use bear spray and report wolf sightings to Banff Dispatch at 1-403-762-1470.

Animals and humans have coexisted in the Bow Valley with mixed results.

Wolves have been struck and killed by motorists. A wolf attacked a family of four from the United States in 2019, and wildlife officers killed a wolf in 2016 after extremely bold behaviour.
