Hurricanes respond to Don Cherry's comments with 'bunch of jerks' T-shirts

While Hockey Night in Canada firecracker Don Cherry has made it very clear he’s not a fan of the Carolina Hurricanes’ win celebrations when they play at home, the team wants everyone to know that they really, truly don’t care.

During Cherry’s popular Coach’s Corner segment on Saturday night, the former Bruins coach called the squad a “bunch of jerks” on a few occasions, saying the team’s spectacles — known as ‘Storm Surges’ — are “a joke.” It’s quite the claim, coming from a man who’s known for his big personality and over-the-top suits, but hey, what do I know!

Videos showing Carolina’s choreographed victory performances have been going viral on social media throughout the season. However, now that the Hurricanes are one of the hottest teams in the NHL (they’re 16-5-1 in 2019), there have been plenty of celebrations, leading to even more talk about them.

Less than 24 hours after Cherry’s rant, the Hurricanes responded with a few passive-aggressive plays on their new nickname.

First, they changed their bio on Twitter.

But the organization didn’t stop there. With Cherry’s comments still making the rounds on social media, the team then decided to turn all of the attention into a profitable campaign.

Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Cherry’s biggest concern seems to stem from the fact that the Hurricanes might continue to have fun once the stakes are even higher.

“They better not do this in the playoffs,” Cherry said.

With their impressive play as of late, his worst nightmare might just become a reality. Carolina currently finds itself just one point shy of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
