Husband of cabinet minister Lena Diab not criminally responsible for assault

The husband of Nova Scotia cabinet minister Lena Diab has been found not criminally responsible for an assault against her on New Year's Eve.

Maroun Diab was charged with assault, uttering threats and choking his wife. He was also accused of threatening two other people.

Diab was sent for a psychiatric assessment and his case was brought back to court last week.

The finding of not criminally responsible means Diab will be held in the East Coast Forensic Hospital while the province's Criminal Code Review Board assesses him.

Diab was arrested early New Year's Day, hours after an alleged victim — identified in court documents as Lena Diab — called police to report an assault.
