Transport truck driver charged after reversing on westbound 401, injuring two

A transport truck reversed on westbound Highway 401 Friday morning and resulted in a collision with a pickup truck, sending two to hospital.

The collision happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. near Puce Road in Lakeshore.

"The driver began to reverse his truck having missed the Puce Road exit," police said in a news release.

The Brampton driver, uninjured, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

Ken Sherman, owner of Sentry Windows and Doors, says it was his two employees who were in the pickup truck.

He said the driver of the pickup, Pete Wiebe, was driving behind the transport when he realized that it was going in reverse about a couple hundred meters away.

Wiebe "swerved as hard as he could and saved both of their lives," Sherman said. The pickup truck spun and the trailer it was hauling ended up under the transport truck, he added.

OPP closed two lanes of the highway for roughly four hours before reopening just before 4 p.m.

Wiebe had minor injuries and the passenger received serious but non-life threatening injuries, police say. Sherman visited them at the hospital Friday afternoon.

"You hear about this type of stuff on the 401 every day, people are getting hurt," he said.

"Pete saved their lives today, in my opinion."
