Stolen car chase ends in crash with hydro pole in Winnipeg

Police block Main Street Thursday morning after a crash between a car and a hydro pole.

A carjacking that started in Selkirk ended with a crash in Winnipeg when the stolen vehicle crashed into a hydro pole.

The male driver fled the scene, running toward Kildonan Park, said RCMP, who are still searching for him.

It all began just after 2:30 a.m. on Main Street in the city of Selkirk when the suspect threatened someone with a knife and stole their car, RCMP said.

The stolen car sped southbound on Highway 9 with RCMP chasing it and alerting Winnipeg police as it approached that city.

Once on Main Street in Winnipeg, the car lost control and jumped the median near McKay Road, slamming into hydro poles, shearing one of them off and the top half dangling from the wires.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m.

City police and RCMP searched for the driver but haven't been able to located him yet.

That section of Main Street was blocked for several hours as hydro crews worked to clean up and repair the damage to the poles.

All lanes reopened by 7 a.m., in time for the morning rush.
