'I haven't processed it yet': Photos show tourists scrambling to evacuate as fast-moving wildfires consume Jasper
Park officials are reporting a "significant loss" in the historic town of Jasper, Alta., after one two out-of-control wildfires raged into the town on Wednesday, consuming homes, businesses and a well-known resort, Maligne Lake Lodge.
"I feel devastated, shattered and absolutely helpless," said Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland in an interview.
Amid pleas from Alberta for federal resources and aid to be dispatched to the region, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to social media Thursday, pledging Canadian Forces deployment and more emergency wildfire resources to the province immediately.
"Alberta, we’re with you," the prime minister wrote in a tweet posted to X.
