iHeartMedia's(NASDAQ:IHRT) Share Price Is Down 46% Over The Past Year.

The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Investors in iHeartMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ:IHRT) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 46%. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 16%. iHeartMedia hasn't been listed for long, so although we're wary of recent listings that perform poorly, it may still prove itself with time. There was little comfort for shareholders in the last week as the price declined a further 13%.

Because iHeartMedia made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

iHeartMedia's revenue didn't grow at all in the last year. In fact, it fell 11%. That's not what investors generally want to see. Shareholders have seen the share price drop 46% in that time. That seems pretty reasonable given the lack of both profits and revenue growth. We think most holders must believe revenue growth will improve, or else costs will decline.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for iHeartMedia in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

A Different Perspective

While iHeartMedia shareholders are down 46% for the year, the market itself is up 16%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. The share price decline has continued throughout the most recent three months, down 6.2%, suggesting an absence of enthusiasm from investors. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand iHeartMedia better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that iHeartMedia is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those shouldn't be ignored...
