WINGHAM – Members of the Wingham Independent MC presented a cheque for $1,000 to the Sacred Heart Catholic School’s breakfast club on June 20, part of the funds the group raised during the year at various fundraising events.
The Independents encourage all other small groups and businesses to donate to the smaller schools, as they often get forgotten.
The primary focus of the Independents is the snack programs around the area. Previous donations to this and other schools have helped provide nutritious food to students, ensuring everybody gets a healthy start to the school day.
Recipients of the Independent MC’s donations in 2021 included Maitland River Elementary School in Wingham, E’Cole Port Elgin Saugeen Central School, Paisley Central School, and Hillcrest Central School in Teeswater.
The club, formed 21 years ago, has raised funds for 13 years for local schools.
The first year they raised $500, according to “Gypsy,” one of the group’s members, and they were able to donate to one school’s program.
The Independents held their third annual 8-Ball Memorial Poker Run on June 18, raising funds for the local breakfast clubs. They also took donations to help a good friend and his family after a terrible car accident that put him in the hospital.
The group plans to continue raising funds through yard sales, barbecues and other fun events throughout the year, with proceeds going towards the health and well-being of the community they live in and beyond.
