Indian fusion spot just closed its Iron District stall. It’ll open in another KC food hall
The Indian fusion food stall Elephant Wings, which has been operating since the beginning of the year out of a shipping container in North Kansas City’s Iron District, permanently closed its location there Sunday.
But it will reopen in a few months inside Parlor, the Crossroads food hall at 1707 Locust St.
“I couldn’t make this move without having learned so much at the Iron District,” said chef-owner Ameet Malhotra. “But (the Iron District) is open-air, and winter’s coming. And Parlor is a great opportunity.”
Malhotra, who was born in Mumbai, started cooking private Indian dinners for friends under the name Elephant Wings in 2014. After being laid off after 18 years as a graphic designer at Hallmark, he turned to cooking full-time in 2020.
He worked under chef Anourom Thomson at the Laotian-American restaurant Anousone in Strang Hall in Overland Park, then opened Elephant Wings at the Iron District in March at 1599 Iron St. (He continues to host private dinners.)
Malhotra said the Parlor location should be up and running in January, if not before.
It will feature the same menu items as the Iron District stall did. Those include the Bombay-Mi (an Indian take on the Banh Mi, with cumin chicken, coriander chutney, pickled cucumber, shredded carrots, jalapeño, cilantro & curried aioli) and tikka masala poutine (french fries, tikka masala sauce, yogurt, scallions, jalapeño, curried paneer & cilantro).
“It’s all homemade, homestyle cooking, nothing pre-brought, everything made by me,” Malhotra said.
Elephant Wings’ hours at Parlor will be Tuesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
