Indonesian volcano sends up five kilometers of ash

Indonesia's Mount Sinabung spewed a giant ash cloud five kilometres into the sky on Monday (August 10), the country's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) said.

Authorities have warned local residents and tourists about possible lava flows, and advised them to stay outside a three-kilometer radius of the volcano, and to wear masks to minimise the effects of falling volcanic ash, the volcanology agency said in a statement.

Monday's eruption follows a smaller eruption on Saturday (August 8) morning, and comes after just over a year of inactivity, last erupting in June 2019.

No casualties have been reported from the latest eruptions, while a spokesperson for the transport ministry said flights had not been disrupted.
