Ottawa police are investigating after a man was shot in the city's west end Wednesday afternoon.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene on the 100 block of Ritchie Street, near Britannia Park, at about 1:10 p.m.

Paramedics said a 26-year-old man was taken to Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus in critical condition, with trauma to his abdomen.

Police said Thursday that he remains in hospital in critical condition.

No arrests have been made, and no information about any possible suspects has been released. The guns and gangs unit is investigating.

Police taped off a parking lot of the Britannia Woods Community House neighbourhood and urged people Wednesday to avoid the area.

"Usually, this neighbourhood is pretty peaceful and quiet," said Cardian Currie, who lives nearby but didn't see what happened.

"We have a lot of children here and we have a lot of good programs for the children. So when we see things like this, it does bother us."

The shooting comes one day after 24-year-old Abdulhamid Haji Ragab was shot at an Ottawa Community Housing neighbourhood on Banff Avenue.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition, and on Thursday police said he died.

The two incidents are unrelated, police also said Thursday.

"The safety and security of tenants is Ottawa Community Housing's top priority," the organization wrote in an emailed statement Wednesday evening.

"OCH cannot provide further details on these separate incidents as both are currently under investigation by the Ottawa Police Service."
